Topic: Characterization of Lung Pathology in Tuberculosis Patients


The Research Center Borstel – Leibniz Lung Center (RCB) is an internationally renowned research institute with over 400 employees, financed by the Federal Government and the State of Schleswig-Holstein. Our central tasks are research and patient care in the field of respiratory diseases. We operate both, basic research infrastructures and a medical care center (MVZ). Our goal is to improve existing methods for the detection, prevention, and treatment of lung diseases and to develop new, innovative therapeutic approaches.

The RCB is looking for a highly motivated medical doctorate candidate to work within a joint project with the National Center for Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases, Georgia, funded by the German Center for Infection Research.


PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Tuberculosis is still under the top ten causes of death worldwide and multi drug resistant strains are on the rise. Together with our collaborators in Georgia we have the access to rare and valuable resected lung material from tuberculosis patients. The successful applicant will immunologically characterize the samples on a molecular and histological level to gain insights into the processes that take place during tuberculosis in situ in patients. We aim to reveal mechanisms that can be targeted to ameliorate disease in a host-directed therapy approach adjunct to antibiotic treatment.


YOUR QUALIFICATION:
• Medical student eligible for a medical doctoral thesis
• Strong interest in experimental immunology and infection research
• The willingness to work in a biological laboratory
• Interest in bioinformatics
