The research group “Immuno-Rhythmology” (group leader: Dr. med. Sebastian Clauss) within the Laboratory for Experimental and Translational Electrophysiology at The Medizinische Klinik and Poliklinik I invites applications for

one PhD student (m/f/d)

Area of responsibility:
The research group “Immuno-Rhythmology” studies the fundamental mechanisms how immune cells regulate the physiologic heart rhythm as well as proarrhythmic remodeling processes leading to arrhythmias.
You will work in the project MacEP (“Macrophages and their role in cardiac ElectroPhysiology and Arrhythmia Mechanisms”; Corona Foundation Grant received recently by Dr. med. Sebastian Clauss). The aim of this project is to determine the functional role of resident cardiac macrophages both in the generation and conduction of normal electrical impulses as well as in arrhythmias. MacEP is a translational project involving in vitro and in vivo models in mice and pigs aiming at identifying novel mechanisms and potential targets to develop new strategies for prevention, risk stratification and treatment of heart rhythm disorders.

In the Laboratory for Experimental and Translational Electrophysiology (PI: Prof. Dr. med. Stefan Kääb, Co-PI: Dr. med. Sebastian Clauss) an international and interdisciplinary team of clinician-scientists, veterinarians, PhD and medical students work in close collaboration on a highly competitive level (Clauss S. et al. Nature Reviews Cardiology 2019; Hulsmans M., Clauss S. et al. Cell 2017). The laboratory is embedded in national and international research networks (e.g. Deutsches Zentrum für Herz-Kreislaufforschung, DZHK) and consortia (e.g. ERA-CVD funded consortium DETECT-ARRHYTHMIAS).

Our requirements:
• Competetive applicants (m/w/d) with a master’s degree in life sciences (e.g. biology, cell biology, biochemistry, immunology) and a strong interest in cardiovascular electrophysiology and arrhythmias
• Practical experience and theoretical knowledge in cell biology or immunology (e.g. in vitro work, genome-editing techniques such as Crispr/Cas9, flow cytometry, FACS)
• Solid German and English skills written and spoken

• National and international short- and medium-term exchange programs with opportunity to visit collaborators’ laboratories (for example in Milan (Italy), Tartu (Estonia), Istanbul (Turkey) or in Boston (USA)) up to several months to learn additional techniques, to perform unique experiments, and to gather international experience
