The Supramolecular and Cellular Simulations Group of the Center for Computational and Theoretical Biology (CCTB), University of Würzburg, Germany (http://www.cctb.uni-wuerzburg.de) is offering a

PhD position in Cellular Simulations for four years, starting on July 1, 2019

The salary will be paid according to TV-L (65% position).
Project description:
Biomedical research in areas like cancer, infection and developmental biology rely more and more on three-dimensional in vitro tissue models. Building such models requires a clear understanding of tissue architecture. The main questions are: how is the spatial arrangement of the cells in the tissue? How do the cells interact? Which other tissue structures are functionally relevant? In many cases, the answers to these questions are not known. To further our understanding, data-driven in silico models established through close interactions between modelers and experimentalists are essential.
The aim of this project is to unravel design principles of biological tissues. The successful candidate utilizes methods from image analysis, spatial data analysis and agent-based modelling to study tissue architecture. The results from the project will further our understanding of the building plan of functional tissue. In addition, new hypotheses will be generated that are then tested experimentally.

Requirements:
• Master or diploma degree in biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, bioinformatics, biomathematics, biophysics or a related discipline
• Experience in image analysis, spatial data analysis or agent-based modelling
• Experience in programming
• Good English language skills (spoken and writing)
• Enthusiasm for interdisciplinary collaborations
• Enthusiasm for thinking outside the box
